Summer at Society, pt. 7—Messiah Revealed

August 25, 2024 / Ricardo Cordero / Psalms 19:1-14 ESV

God’s revelation invites us to live as and caringly people.

1. The universe reveals the of a

Psalm 19:1-2 ESV
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. 2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.

2. The Word of Yahweh provides benefits such as , , and

Torah: Hebrew word sometimes used for law, but often (as in this passage) meaning the totality of God’s instruction or teachings.

Psalm 19:7-11 ESVThe law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

3. The Word of Yahweh beckons us to seek God for and .

Psalm 19:12-14 ESV
Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

In verse 1, the Hebrew word for “sky” is “raqia” which in Genesis 1:6-7 was the “firmament” that divided the waters.

4. God’s revelation invites us to live as and caringly people.

“If we think of Torah in this way, as a gracious admonition and guide, then it is like the protective firmament mentioned in 19:1, which provides a shield against destructive chaos. Torah marks out the boundaries of holy living in the presence of a holy God. Torah is not a way to gain God’s gracious presence but is a response to the reality of the holy God dwelling already in the midst of his people.” — Gerald H. Wilson

Application: Pray, meditate, and embody Psalm 19 in the morning and/or at night.

Imagine if we lived knowing we are accepted by God and rejoicing with the guidance of His caring word.

Answer Key: accepted, guided; craft, creator; wisdom, joy, light; deliverance, redemption; whole, disobedience; accepted, guided
