Life Together, pt. 3—Slow is Fast.

September 22, 2024 / Sean Arisco / Mark 4:35-41 NIV

Slow is Fast.
We move faithfully in the pace of the Spirit, trusting that we can accomplish more by maintaining healthy rhythms and relationships than in anxiety and hurry.

Psalm 27:14 NLT
Wait patiently for the LORD. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the LORD.

Mark 4:35 NIV
That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.”

Mark 4:37 NIV
A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.

Jesus rested in the storm to how to rest in our storm.

1. Live and

Mark 5:5 NIV
Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

“If the devil can’t make you bad, he’ll make you busy.” —Corrie Ten Boom

Matthew 8:20 NIV
Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head.

“Possessions, outward success, publicity, luxury, to me these have always been contemptable. I assume that a simple and unassuming manner of life is best for everyone. Best for both the body and the mind.” –Albert Einstein

2. Embrace and

Mark 1:35-36 NIV
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

Mark 6:30 NIV
The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all that he had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going, that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me, by yourselves, to a quiet place and get some rest.’ So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.

Isolation our pain. Community our pain.

Isolation leads to . Solitude leads to .

“Loneliness is an inner emptiness, but solitude is an inner fulfillment in Christ.” —Richard Foster

3. and

Matthew 11:28-30 NIV
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Question for Reflection—
Which of these practices (slow and simple, silence and solitude, stop and rest) is the Spirit inviting me to grow into? How can I create space for them to take place?
