ICON, pt. 5—Running on Oil

March 2, 2025 / Sean Arisco / 1 Samuel 16:1-13 NIV

Oil in Scripture—

  1. A Source of

  2. Promotes and

3. for Fire

4. of God’s Calling and Power

1 John 2:20 NIV
But you have an anointing from the Holy One.

Ephesians 1:13 NIV
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.

We are not the , but we are called to Him.

An Oil Carrier Is—

1. on the Commission

Acts 1:8 NIV
You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

We Need the of God to fulfill the of God.

The Holy Spirit was first experienced in the safe company of the apostles in the enclosed upper room at the culmination of a forty-nine-day prayer meeting. But that same Spirit quickly led those very people beyond the cozy confines of their gathering and into mission. –Tyler Staton

2. with the Spirit

Ephesians 5:18 NLT
Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit.

3. in the Crushing

Romans 5:3-5 NLT
We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

4. Flexible to the Gifts

1 Corinthians 12:4-6 NIV
There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

The Holy Spirit makes the impractical practice-able. This is what the gifts of the Holy Spirit are all about: making the totally impractical (the supernatural, the miraculous, the gospel ministry of Jesus) not only possible (in extreme situations by super-spiritual people) but practice-able (by ordinary people tabernacled by an extraordinary God). –Tyler Staton

5. what Grieves the Spirit

Ephesians 4:29-32 NIV
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Psalm 51:10-12 NIV
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
