How to Pray, pt. 1—Our Father, On Earth as in Heaven

August 24, 2025 / Sean Arisco / Luke 11:1-4 NIV

Luke 11:1-2 NLT
Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” 2 Jesus said, “This is how you should pray:”

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.

Familiarity can beauty.

The Lord’s Prayer is a , not a .

“In The Prayer is comprised an epitome of the whole Gospel.” –Tertullian, De Oratione

“For nearly two thousand years people have prayed this prayer. When you take these words on your lips you stand on hallowed ground.” –N.T. Wright, The Lord and His Prayer

Jesus Taught us to Pray—

1.

“Our Father in Heaven”

Exodus 4:22-23 NIV
Israel is my firstborn son, 23 and I told you, “Let my son go, so he may worship me.

Isaiah 63:16 NLT
Surely you are still our Father! Even if Abraham and Jacob would disown us, LORD, you would still be our Father. You are our Redeemer from ages past.

Also See: Dt. 32:6; Is. 64:8; Jer. 31:9; Hos. 11:1

2. (Together)

“OUR Father”

3.

“Hallowed Be Your Name”

Leviticus 22:32 NIV
Do not profane my holy name, for I must be acknowledged as holy by the Israelites. I am the Lord, who made you holy

“What’s the point of a divinity you can fit on a thumb drive, on a bumper sticker, or within a human skull? The God of the cosmos must surely be bigger than our capacity to understand.” –Pete Greig, How to Pray

4. In

“Your Kingdom Come… on Earth as it is in Heaven.”

“God has instituted prayer in order to allow His creatures the dignity of causality.” – Blaise Pascal, Pensées

“We are not locked into a pre-set, deterministic future. Ours is an open, not a closed, universe. We are ‘co-laborers,’ working with God to determine the outcome of events.” –Richard Foster, Crucifying our Will

5. In

“Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

Luke 22:42 NIV
Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.
